Opening of the "Light and Matter" Exhibition
On June 18, 2024, we celebrated the opening of the special exhibition "Light and Matter," developed by the Deutsches Museum in collaboration with the Munich Center for Quantum Science and Technology (MCQST). The exhibition, which runs until the end of 2025, offers visitors an immersive experience into the fundamentals of quantum optics.
"Light and Matter" delves into the captivating interplay between light and matter, showcasing their interactions as the foundation of quantum optics. Starting with walk-through double-slit experiment, visitors take on a journey traversing a century of scientific advancements, from everyday technologies like scanners at the supermarket checkout and fibre optic cables to cutting-edge quantum technologies that manipulate individual light particles.
The opening was marked by opening speeches from Markus Blume, Bavarian State Minister for Science and the Arts, and Wolfgang Heckl, Director General of the Deutsches Museum. Science TV presenter Ralph Caspers, known for "Sendung mit der Maus" and "Quarks," hosted the event. The evening featured a panel discussion on "The future of quantum technologies" and a captivating lecture by Wolfgang Ketterle, Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology on making quantum physics visible. Guests were invited to explore the exhibition, which opened to the public on June 19, 2024.
The recording (in German) of the event is available on our
YouTube channel.
The following day was dedicated to celebrating everyone involved in creating this unique exhibition, bringing together the museum and MCQST communities. No other exhibition has seen so much contribution from the museum's workshops. As you walk through "Light and Matter," it is evident that it is a product of love, dedication, and masterful craftsmanship.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for these celebrations!
